Suspected burglar awaits sentencing

A man accused of breaking and entering into a Sundre home earlier this summer is awaiting sentencing.

According to an inquiry submitted to the provincial Court Administration Services Contact Centre, Michael Hicks is scheduled to appear in Didsbury court on Feb. 24, 2020.

The Sundre RCMP arrested and subsequently charged Hicks last July after responding to a report from the house’s owner, who was not home at the time, that a burglar had fled the property after discovering two young boys hiding inside. Although the boys were frightened, police at the time stated in a press release that they were not harmed.

The suspect was making his way through the home filling up his pockets when he saw the two boys attempting to hide in their rooms, and then promptly fled the scene. But the suspect was identified through footage of the break-in that was captured by video surveillance cameras, and police were able to track him down.

Two of three suspects sentenced

Two of three individuals accused and charged with multiple offences following reports of suspicious activity immediately west of Sundre this summer were recently sentenced.

The Sundre RCMP responded last July to several calls from citizens who expressed concerns about three persons that had been observed attempting to get a white pickup truck out of the mud, but promptly fled upon being seen.

Police were able to, following a brief pursuit, eventually track down all three of the suspects involved, who were then arrested without incident. Two of the individuals had outstanding arrest warrants, police had reported.

Samantha Petersen was, according to an inquiry submitted to the provincial Court Administration Services Contact Centre, sentenced on Sept. 16 in Didsbury court to a 150-day jail term with an 18-month probation following her release over charges of possession of break-in instruments and breaching the conditions of her recognizance. A charge of possession of property under $5,000 was withdrawn.

Jason Burns was sentenced on Oct. 10 to a 30-day jail term as well as a five-year firearm prohibition over a charge of unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm, as well as a 60-day jail term over a charge of being in possession of a prohibited firearm. A charge of possession of break-in instruments was withdrawn.

Michael Goodine is scheduled to speak to Didsbury court on Nov. 18.

Flee from police

In another matter, Richard Bow-Noskiye, from Sundre, who was charged last November with numerous offences after allegedly fleeing from police in a stolen vehicle, was to be back in Didsbury provincial court on Nov. 4. However, his case was according to an inquiry submitted to the provincial Court Administration Services Contact Centre rescheduled to Nov. 18.
