OLDS — Town officials are gearing up for a big event this Saturday, Sept. 11: the grand opening of Rotary Athletic Park of Olds.

The facility, located along 70th Avenue, just north of Walmart, contains soccer pitches, baseball diamonds, and horseshoe pits; even a creek and walking path along the north side.

It took a couple of years to build the approximately $3.6-million park. The town, province, Mountain View County, Rotary Club and various businesses and individuals all contributed toward its construction and amenities.

People began using the park in 2020. Due to COVID restrictions, a soft opening -- a video of officials speaking -- occurred in 2020.

Its facilities got rave reviews from out-of-towners during the AA 15U baseball provincials, hosted by the Olds Spitfires Aug. 27-29.

Town officials say this grand opening will occur rain or shine.

Activities get underway at 11 a.m. with an opening ceremony, including a ribbon cutting event.

At 12 p.m., hotdogs and treats will be available and there will be lots of games to enjoy, including youth and adult soccer, baseball and slow pitch games.

Inflatable Astro Jump Games will be set up for the younger ones.

Residents are urged to bring their lawn chairs for an afternoon of fun.
