Building permit values jump in Olds

OLDS — The total value of building permits issued by the Town of Olds during the first six months of the year jumped up by more than $2 million over the same period last year, according to the municipality's 2022 building statistics.

The total number of permits issued during that period also rose slightly, to 55 from 51.

From January through June this year, 55 building permits were issued for projects with a construction value total of $6,667,100. During the first six months of 2021, 51 building permits were handed out for projects worth a total of $4,123,344.

Most of the difference in total project value can be attributed to one permit, for a project valued at $197,500, filed under the institutional category.

Last year, three permits were issued under that category, but not until July. And when they were issued, all three totalled $922,405.

From January through June this year, eight permits were issued for detached homes worth a total of $3 million.

Last year, from January through May, 10 permits were issued for detached homes worth a total of $2,892,000. No such permits were recorded during the month of June.

The stats were presented during the Olds municipal planning commission’s July meeting.

“Looks good,” commission member Dan Peters said as commissioners mulled over the figures.

Commissioners voted to accept the report as information.
