Local residents win Seniors' Open golf tournament in Olds

Doran Thorburn of Olds chips the ball out of a sand trap onto the green during the HUB Insurance Senior Open, held June 22 at the Olds Golf Club.

OLDS — Local residents won both the men’s and ladies portions of the HUB Insurance Seniors Open golf tournament, held June 22 at the Olds Golf Club.

On the men’s side, Olds resident Keith Newton survived a playoff over Olds Golf Club president Mike Dezall from Olds and Don Ware of Sundre.

On the ladies side, Olds resident Cathy Spicer eked out a win by one shot over Barb Marsh of Red Deer.

Newton and Spicer have are past tournament champions. In fact, they’ve each won it several times, according to Olds Golf Club pro Wade Bearchell.

A total of 132 golfers from across Alberta competed in the event.

The tournament came in the middle of a week of off and on again rain, but rainfall didn’t affect the match too much, Bearchell indicated.

“We had a 30-minute rain and hail delay,” he wrote in an email. “Other than that the weather was perfect.”
