Digital treasure hunt

Noah Desrosiers, 15, who lives north of Sundre, gets a helping hand from Sarah Kennedy to follow instructions outlined in an app to unlock a geocache at the Sundre and District Museum grounds.

A group of about a dozen people took part last Tuesday afternoon in a geocaching introductory workshop hosted in collaboration between Mountain View Communities Adult Learning Society and the Sundre Municipal Library that was coordinated by Gerry Greschner, MVCALS facilitator, and Joy Willihnganz, library programmer.

Anyone with a smartphone can embark on a geocaching excursion — essentially a GPS directed digital treasure hunt — by downloading the free app at www.geocaching.com and then creating a profile and logging in.

There are more than a dozen caches in Sundre, and far more in the surrounding area. Common etiquette includes leaving caches and the surrounding environment as they were found, as well as signing a logbook.
