CARSTAIRS - The Carstairs Elementary School expansion project officially got underway this month.

An official ground-breaking ceremony was held Oct. 9 with attendance by superintendent Kurt Sacher, Town of Carstairs Mayor Lance Colby, school board chair Holly Bilton, area MLA Nathan Cooper, vice board chair Melissa Copley, school principal John Goutsis, and START Architecture representative Trent Franson.

The expansion will see 10 additional classroom spaces built to accommodate 250 students. It will also involve additions to the gym, and expand the parking lot and bus loop. It is expected to be completed in mid-2021.

Provincial officials annonced last November that the Carstairs K-2 school, which has been operating at full capacity, would be one of four across the province to receive an addition. The Carstairs school was the only one in Chinook’s Edge School Division to receive funding.
