CARSTAIRS - Police and emergency crews were at the scene of a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 2 south of the Carstairs overpass this morning.

RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney says the collision involved a semi that went off the southbound lane and into the centre ditch on Monday, Jan. 30. The semi was then struck by an ambulance, also travelling southbound, she said.

At least one person, believed to be an occupant of the ambulance, has been hurt, she said.

Road conditions at the site were very poor, she said.

“I just talked to one of the (responding RCMP) members and he said it is completely black ice,” she told the Albertan.

At 10 a.m., one of the two southbound lanes was open with traffic moving slowly past the collision site, she said.

RCMP gave an update at 10:55 a.m. that the collision scene was now clear.

"The area is very slippery so please travel with caution," the update stated.
