Edmonton police say driver and passenger die after car flees and crashes into pole

EDMONTON — Two people are dead and a third was gravely injured after police in Edmonton say the vehicle they were in fled from officers and later crashed into a pole.

Police say they attempted to stop the Ford Focus early Monday because the owner was listed as a suspended driver, but they say it sped off on the Whitemud Freeway.

Police say they didn't chase the car, but it was later found near an off ramp, where it had reportedly lost control and struck a light pole.

The woman who was driving and a 31-year-old male passenger died at the scene.

A 23-year-old female passenger in the vehicle was transported .to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police say they're still investigating.
